This unique jail was used until 1982, when a court action forced it to near. When the jail was in use, prisoners could be seen waving from the barred windows. Inside, there is a spiral staircase that leads up to three floors of jail cells, each w/ a toilet, shower, lavatory & window. Deridders Gothic-looking hanging Jail is 1 of the most distinctive of its type in the US Its collegiate Gothic architectural style offers shallow arches, dormer windows, & a central tower. The iron bars in most of the windows give the structure an eerie appearance. In 1981 it was put on the National Register of Historic Places, along w/ several other buildings in DeRidder.
