Originally built in 1832 as a private residence by a Virginia General, The Martha Washington Inn has seen a lot of different uses. French doors & a retractable roof bring the outside inside in the ward summer months. The Inn's 62 guestrooms & suites reflect the carefully assembled collection of Victorian, Edwardian & Georgian-period antiques & artifacts that grace this one-time mansion. Guest appreciate turndown service, a morning newspaper, overnight shoeshine, & English toiletries. Each room is different in decor, size & configuration. When the armies of the Civil War battled in & around Abingdon, The building served as a hospital for wounded soldiers, & romantic stories of nurses & soldiers still endure to this day After the Civil War The Martha became a women's college & today is an elegant hotel, paying homage to its gracious Southern roots & enduring historic legacy. A sundeck off the swimming pool provides the perfect spot for a quiet read or warm relaxation in the sun We are in addition proud to announce, in February 2006, the opening of The Spa at The Martha. The Martha Washington Inn, now offers to its visitors, the newly completed natatorium, w/ its brick facade matching the timeless decor of the building. From Private residence it evolved into a finishing school for young ladies. The Spa features beautifully appointed treatment rooms, the latest in equipment technology plus an adjoining fitness area, easily near to dressing & locker rooms.

The Martha Washington Inn is located on nine acres in the heart of historic Downtown Abingdon, Virginia. The town, chartered in 1778, is itself a Virginia Historic Landmark. It is the oldest town west of the Blue Ridge Mountains and is between the Great Smoky and Allegheny Mountains in the Western part of the state where Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, and North Carolina meet. The Hotel is situated in the center of the historic district close to all shops dining and the theatre.
